This is the point that Azula starts to despise Iroh. Iroh, someone she probably grew up admiring for his soldiering abilities, abandons his post. Yet she takes her dislike out on the doll, there is no sign that she dislikes or is angry with her uncle at this point. HIs gifts to his nephew and niece shows his favoritism on many fronts, not only in that he doesn’t understand Azula’s psychology, but he is hinting that she has no right to be who she is, that she doesn’t have a right to be a strong soldier, and that he considers her on par with the enemy. Instead she mimics his actions she destroys the enemy.

Basically he is telling her to act in the opposite way that he is acting, by playing nice with the enemy, which in some ways can be seen as a traitorous act. Azula receives a doll whom she is told is a friend. Simply wielding it shows he defeats his enemy. Zuko gets an awesome gift of the enemies knife.

Neither did Zuko or Azula, but they only laugh after she does. She showed no compassion for the people being killed. He wrote a letter showing how happy he was for his successful war efforts when he was in his late 50s early 60s. Ozai may have been, but he wasn’t in the army in any capacity. He would have been part of the war council. He WAS a general when Katara’s mother was murdered. Depending on how old Hama is he may or may not have been fighting at a time when she was taken prisoner. If he began fighting as late as 18, he was fighting for 41 years. I estimate his age as 65 during the show, meaning he about 59 when Lu Ten was killed.

I don’t understand what is heroic about this man other than he helped Zuko, which is a point in favor of ATLA being told from Zuko’s point of view.įor 40-50 years (depending on how old he was when he became a soldier and how old he was in the show) he fought against the EK. My own dislike of Iroh began with his fondling a paralyzed June, grew with his “She’s crazy she has to go down”, grew to disgust when he just went back to the EK rather than attempt to talk to his institutionalized niece and went off the charts with the “spoiler” in The Rift where he is headed back to the EK, his niece who knows where. Several have spoken about his toxic relationship with Azula and wondered at the cause. Several people have spoken eloquently about Iroh and how, despite his popularity, they find him problematic at best.
